Experiencing Multi-Dimensional View at Plantation Retreat ‘The Ray'
Located at the foothill in Alibag, India, Plantation Retreat, with its well-proportioned design, is a panoramic object on the hillside and has extraordinary scenic potential.

The steep hillside conditions were the main challenge in designing this plantation retreat villa named 'The Ray'. The most proportional shape was obtained from the trial and error process, prioritizing axis and silhouette elements that form in harmony with the surrounding environment. The main form of the plantation retreat is two parallel masses perpendicular to the contour, which are connected by an underground passage. Taking inspiration from Portuguese chapels, which have minimal openings, this villa is designed with many wide openings combined with firm and clear geometric shapes. Architecture BRIO specifically explores forms with light-structures columns and a dominant roof structure, resulting in a 'veranda house' that allows users to enjoy the natural views.

This building stands on a stone base structure (plinth), also as a retaining wall. The top of the plinth also functions as an open courtyard. On the other mass, there is an infinity pool with curved lines that contrast with the geometric shape of the building, mirroring the coastline below, creating harmony between the living and outdoor spaces.

The 'telescope' concept is used in several aspects of this building. Starting from the space between the two masses, it makes anyone in this area feel like they are walking through a telescope with a narrow entrance and then widening, with each part having a view with a different aspect of beauty. The highlight is the view of the hillside and the panoramic view of the ocean. This concept is also applied to the main building with an opening design with a deep recess, creating a frame for the view to give an impression that the distant sea feels close.

The pavilion's walls are made of limestone “Dhrangadhra”, making it glisten under the tropical sunlight. Steel-framed windows in deep recesses are muted by white-painted wooden shutters, offering shade and a sense of connection to the hilly surroundings.

With the potential for its multi-dimensional views, 'The Ray' plantation retreat is designed to appreciate the object of The Ray itself and the natural panorama from all sides with different telescopic moments as the day and season go by.
