Guntur House: A Compact Tropical House by PSA Studio

March 2, 2023

PSA Studio has completed the construction of Guntur House, which is a development of simple client needs. With a land area of 300m2, the client only needs half of the land area to build the main rooms, and the other half is the development of the PSA Studio team to function as a family recreation area such as a sports room, gathering place, and playground.

PSA Studio designed Guntur House with a spatial arrangement that slightly 'plays' the formation of the building masses to produce a unique residence with a tropical concept but still maintains the privacy of its residents.

Guntur House is arranged into two floors, where the ground floor functions as a public and semi-public space containing a family room, kitchen, dining room, worship room, carport, and of course, a spacious terrace house. While the second floor is intended as a private room containing the master bedroom, children's bedroom, work room, and a spacious balcony. A simple arrangement with this kind of spatial arrangement makes the house look compact and dense. Although it seems crowded, Studio PSA was able to build one space for outdoor and semi-indoor family recreational facilities as a form of development of the Guntur House design.

Such spatial planning is included in the concept of tropical architectural spatial planning. In addition, a unique and different-looking tropical concept is also applied to this house by tilting the wall's façade limiting the opening's width to protect against rain and direct sunlight. It can also be seen that brick material dominates the secondary skin and a room boundary material, making the concept of tropical housing even more pronounced with vegetation such as thatch grass, tall trees, and vines.

PSA Studio made a fairly high main gate to maintain privacy using massive material connected to the carport canopy. A fence wall also protects the placement of the terrace, and the placement of spacious balcony on the second floor is far from the house's boundary with the main road.

Every room in this house is planned as carefully as possible according to the owner's needs, who wants everything to be the right size but accommodate all his needs. For example, the staircase area and children's room only use boards as dividers, fused into furniture elements. In addition, almost every corner of the house is used as a storage place to keep the house looking neat.
