Studio Entitas Transforms Ideas through W House

February 20, 2023

A residence in Medan City, with a building area of 290 square meters, has recently been designed by Studio Entitas. W House is designed to accommodate the needs of a family of 6, with the desire of owners who want a house where they can gather in one large living room and all bedrooms can be accessed and visible from the living room while maintaining privacy between users.

With the homeowner's wishes, Studio Entitas divided the building into three zones: the public zone in front, the semi-public zone in the middle, and the private zone in the back with an orientation to the back garden. In addition, it also divides the mass of the building into two axes, with the intersection of the two axes forming a space that becomes a large living room.

The front area, closer to the main road, is where the public area is located, aiming to facilitate daily access outside the house and become a separate zone from the main building. The terrace is placed in a semi-open area at the front of the house to maintain privacy when guests visit.

Then, the central area was centered as a semi-public area, consisting of a living room, dining room, kitchen, and a family room with wide openings and a terrace leading to the back garden. The entrance to the house is in the middle of the building, directly facing the central garden, which is the main access to the family room or service area.

Then the back area is used as a private area for the bedroom. With its position behind, The bedroom can still get a wide view of the garden. Just as the building mass adopts a simple shape, so do the materials and colors, using muted colors with wood floor materials and a rough cement texture that covers the façade of the building.

The choice of material also affects the appearance of the building. The building is made to look large from the front but has many openings inside. The sloping garden at the front was created to 'soften' the large front so that it is more integrated with the surrounding environment. The space under the inclined garden is used as a storage room and generator.
