September 23, 2021

The London Design District is a new creative hub located in the heart of the Greenwich Peninsula. On 15 September 2021, this area will be opened and started operating to the public. It will also serve as the main destination for the city's creative community. In addition, this project also aims to bring together start-ups, artists, and entrepreneurs from many different industries to be able to produce a new, more dynamic environment.

The London Design District consists of 16 buildings that were designed collectively by eight renowned architectural studios, while the landscaping was done by Schulze+Grassov. The architectural and outdoor appearance of the Design District is based on the vision of a “creative ecosystem” which is then embodied in an eclectic design theme. This concept opens up opportunities for businesses and individuals to interact and exchange ideas synergistically. In the early days of operation, there will be an architectural tour program related to design and art performances.

A series of other events are prepared to introduce the development of a new creative community to the public. The development of this creative community hub is carried out by providing affordable workspaces, studios, and workshops. In addition, there are also sports facilities, a food market, as well as spaces specifically designated for recreational and cultural activities. In the planning and designing process of the London Design District, eight architectural studios gave their contributions. The eight studios are Barozzi Veiga, 6a Architect, Mole Architects, Architecture 00, Selgas Cano, HNNA, Adam Khan Architects, and David Kohn Architects.

To realize the design of the existing 16 buildings, each practice independently designed two buildings each with varying aesthetic variations. These designs create a diverse set of architectures and spaces that can replicate the atmosphere of an organically developed environment. The buildings in the Design District are rented out to groups from different backgrounds. From social enterprises, music labels, to even one of the most influential vocational education institutions in the UK, Ravensbourne University has also placed its postgraduate department in this place. The Director of the Design District, Helen Arvanitakis, said that they wanted to create a space that could be a place to nurture creative industries. It is hoped that this place will allow creative freelancers to find homes, work partners, and opportunities for further development.
